Nairobi Hosts Africa Climate Week 2023
Next week, African leaders will convene in Nairobi, Kenya for Africa Climate Week, an annual gathering focused on addressing the climate crisis by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing resilience. The event, commencing on September 4th, will bring together policymakers, business figures, and environmental advocates from all across the continent.
This assembly is particularly crucial as African countries are experiencing a more rapid temperature increase compared to many other regions, resulting in frequent extreme weather events, prolonged droughts, food scarcity, and loss of life.
It is worth noting that Africa, despite contributing less than 3% to global emissions, will use this platform to call for increased financial assistance to tackle the climate crisis and adapt accordingly.
Africa Climate Week 2023 is one of four regional climate weeks taking place this year and serves as a catalyst for the UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai. The event is organized by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Environment Programme, and the World Bank, with support from regional collaborators.
